Corporate Event Calendar South Africa 2027: the dates that make or break your plans

Most 2027 event problems are date problems. Catch them now.
- Four long weekends shape 2027: 20–22 March, Easter (26–29 March), 7–9 August and 24–26 September. Avoid Fridays and Mondays next to them for anything that needs full attendance.
- Human Rights Day and the Day of Goodwill fall on Sundays, so Monday 22 March and Monday 27 December are public holidays.
- Schools go back on 13 January. Term 1 runs to 19 March, and the winter break is 26 June to 19 July.
- February is busy but good value: SA20 cricket, Mining Indaba (8–11 Feb) and Meetings Africa (22–24 Feb) compete for attention, but venues discount hard compared with November.
- Year-end season runs mid-October to mid-December. In 2027 it collides with the Rugby World Cup knockouts. The final is on Saturday 13 November.
Every year we see the same mistakes. A product launch lands on the Friday before Easter. A strategy day gets booked into Ramadan with a 17:00 cocktail start. A year-end function is set for the same Saturday as a Springbok final. None of them are budget problems. They're calendar problems, and you can avoid all of them if you check the year before you sign a venue contract.
This guide is the calendar we use at B&W Productions when we plan corporate events across Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and Midrand. We've checked every date against official sources (listed at the end). Filter it, search it, and download it straight into Outlook.

2027 public holidays and what they mean for events
South Africa has 12 public holidays. Under the Public Holidays Act, when one falls on a Sunday, the Monday that follows becomes a holiday. In 2027 that rule applies twice.
| Date | Holiday | What it means for planners |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 1 Jan | New Year's Day | Many offices only fully reopen from Monday 11 January. |
| Sun 21 Mar → Mon 22 Mar | Human Rights Day (observed Monday) | Long weekend 20–22 March. Don't schedule a Friday 19 March event that needs out-of-town delegates. |
| Fri 26 Mar & Mon 29 Mar | Good Friday & Family Day | Two long weekends in a row, back to back with school holidays. Late March is effectively a write-off for big events. |
| Tue 27 Apr | Freedom Day | Monday 26 April is a gazetted school holiday, so expect many people to take a four-day bridge. |
| Sat 1 May | Workers' Day | Falls on a Saturday, so there's no extra day off. |
| Wed 16 Jun | Youth Day | A midweek break. Avoid two-day events that span 15–17 June. |
| Mon 9 Aug | National Women's Day | Long weekend. Women's Month programming often runs all of August. |
| Fri 24 Sep | Heritage Day | Long weekend, and an easy hook for a culture-themed team day on the Thursday. |
| Thu 16 Dec | Day of Reconciliation | The unofficial start of the shutdown. Year-end functions after 10 December lose attendance quickly. |
| Sat 25, Sun 26 & Mon 27 Dec | Christmas, Day of Goodwill (observed Monday) | The Department of Basic Education's gazetted calendar lists 27 December as a public holiday. |

School terms: why they matter for corporate events
School holidays drive leave. Leave drives attendance, and family days, incentive trips and weekend retreats depend on it. The DBE has gazetted one national school calendar for 2027:
| Term | Learners | Planner's read |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | 13 Jan – 19 Mar | The prime window for sales kick-offs, strategy sessions and conferences. |
| Term 2 | 6 Apr – 25 Jun | The long, steady conference season. Avoid the Youth Day week if you can. |
| Term 3 | 20 Jul – 22 Sep | Good for AGMs, awards and launches. Women's Day and Heritage Day sit inside it. |
| Term 4 | 5 Oct – 8 Dec | Year-end season. Schools close 8 December, and many senior people go on leave soon after. |
Business events, sport and culture worth planning around
January–February: the kick-off squeeze
Betway SA20 runs from 17 January to 21 February, with the final at Newlands. The Investing in African Mining Indaba takes over Cape Town from 8 to 11 February, so expect Cape Town hotel rates to spike. Meetings Africa, the continent's flagship business-events trade show, is at the Sandton Convention Centre from 22 to 24 February. If you're running a Sandton conference that week, book accommodation early.
Ramadan and Eid
Ramadan is expected to begin around 7–8 February 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around 9–10 March, depending on the moon sighting. That puts it across most of the kick-off season. Plan evening networking around iftar, offer proper halaal catering, and avoid scheduling a gala on Eid itself.
October–November: Rugby World Cup meets year-end season
The 2027 Rugby World Cup runs in Australia from 1 October to 13 November. The Springboks' pool games are on Sunday mornings in South African time (about 05:45, 08:45 and 13:15). The final is on Saturday 13 November at about 11:00 SAST, right in the middle of year-end function season. This works in your favour: Sunday-morning matches don't clash with Friday or Saturday night functions, and a Springbok breakfast screening makes a strong client event.
Black Friday
Friday 26 November. If your guests are in retail, e-commerce or marketing, they won't come to anything that week.

Peak and off-peak: when venues cost the most
Demand for Gauteng venues isn't flat. Here's how we read the year when we advise clients. It reflects our booking experience and supplier pricing patterns, not a published market index.
- Mid-October to mid-December is peak. Thursday to Saturday evenings sell out first, and AV and production crews are fully booked. Suppliers we speak to say November rates are their highest of the year.
- January to March is the value window. The same venue can cost noticeably less in February than in November. That's one reason so many companies hold kick-offs and conferences early.
- July is quiet because of school holidays and leave. That's good for rates, bad for attendance.

A quick 2027 planning playbook
- Kick-offs and strategy sessions: late January to early March. Avoid the 22–24 February Meetings Africa week in Sandton if accommodation matters.
- Conferences: April to early June, or late July to mid-September. Watch the Youth Day and Women's Day weeks.
- AGMs: follow your financial year-end and the Companies Act notice periods. Read our conference and meeting planning services.
- Year-end functions: lock your venue by the end of July for any November Friday or Saturday. Use the Springbok matches to your advantage.
- Family days: Saturdays in term time, or the Heritage Day long weekend if your people aren't travelling.
Frequently asked questions
How many public holidays does South Africa have in 2027?
South Africa has 12 statutory public holidays. In 2027 Human Rights Day (21 March) and the Day of Goodwill (26 December) fall on Sundays, so Monday 22 March and Monday 27 December are also days off under the Public Holidays Act.
When do schools open in 2027?
Learners in public schools return on Wednesday 13 January 2027. Term 1 ends on 19 March. Term 2 runs 6 April to 25 June, Term 3 from 20 July to 22 September, and Term 4 from 5 October to 8 December, according to the Department of Basic Education's gazetted calendar.
When is the best time to hold a corporate conference in Gauteng in 2027?
Late January to early March, and April to early June, give you the best mix of attendance and venue rates. Avoid long-weekend Fridays and Mondays, the Easter fortnight and the mid-October to mid-December year-end peak if budget matters.
Does the 2027 Rugby World Cup clash with year-end functions?
Partly. The tournament runs from 1 October to 13 November in Australia. The Springbok pool matches kick off on Sunday mornings or around midday in South African time, so they rarely clash with evening functions. The final is on Saturday 13 November at about 11:00 SAST, which suits a breakfast or brunch screening.
How far in advance should I book a year-end function venue?
For a Friday or Saturday in November or early December, book by the end of July. Popular Gauteng venues and production crews fill up through August and September, and from mid-October availability is very limited.
